In 1979 Jerry and Andrea Saunders founded a grocery store in Waycross, Georgia. It was here that they first began working with DELI meats and cheeses. This venture sparked an interest in developing a full DELI restaurant that offered great quality food that was affordable to everyone. In 1981, this dream became a reality with the opening of Deli Mart. It was during this period that the first oven baked submarine sandwiches were offered. In 1983, this operation was moved to a better location and renamed Michael's DELI after one of his sons. This was the true beginning of a star!
Throughout the years that followed, the Saunders continued to expand the DELI menu with the addition of hand-breaded seafood dinners. This gave Michael's DELI an even larger customer base by broadening its appeal and truly becoming a restaurant that offered something for everyone. It wasn't long before a reputation was born and Michael's DELI became known for their excellent quality food, big portions and great prices.
The Saunders family decided it was time to test their operation in other markets. They chose the Brunswick / Golden Isles area. In March of 1993, they opened their second location. Their exposure to tourist and travelers along interstate 95 gave them a chance to offer their concept to a diverse population. Michael's DELI was an instant success. This success only fueled their desire for further expansion.
In the 10 years that followed, stores were opened throughout Georgia. This growth has been accomplished by building a strong support system that ensures the highest quality and service standards for each location.
